THE (JANE) BIRKIN BAG - the real story.

It was 1984, on an Air France flight from Paris to London there was the beautiful actress Jane Birkin seated by chance next to Monsieur Jean Louis Dumas, the chairman of the Hermes Group (from 1978 to 2006). Jane Birkin took her Hermes agenda out from her bag and all her papers fell down on the floor..so she started to collect her papers mumbling that her agenda really needed a pocket. Monsieur Dumas looked at her and kindly asked if she wanted to leave him the agenda for some days so that he could find a solution. Some weeks later Jane Birkin received her agenda back with a pocket sewed on the cover and she noticed that from that moment all the agendas produced were done with pockets!


...But this is not the only thing happened on that flight...after discussing about the agenda Jane Birkin started complaining about bags. Jane said that a leather bag for the week-end that is not too big and not too small and that when is full is not too heavy did't exist. So Monsieur Dumas asked her to describe the perfect bag according to her. After some weeks Jane received another present.. 


Guess what?


Dumas adapted the Haut à Courroies bag to Jane's thoughts and it was perfect! Of course the name of the bag soon became Birkin! Jane Birkin and Grace Kelly at that time were the only one that had a bag renamed to them! A bag that has contributed to their immortality.




Era il 1984 quando su un volo Air France da Parigi a Londra si incontrarono la splendida attrice Jane Birkin seduta casualmente accanto al presidente del gruppo Hermes (dal 1978 al 2006) Monsieur Jean Louis Dumas. Jane Birkin tirò fuori dalla borsa un'agenda e tutti i suoi fogli caddero a terra, lei iniziò a raccoglierli lamentando il fatto che all'epoca le agende fossero sprovviste di tasche. Monsieur Dumas a quel punto, colpito dallo spunto appena ricevuto, chiese a Jane Birkin di lasciargli l'agenda per un po' in modo che potesse provvedere a migliorarla. Dopo poche settimane Jane Birkin ricevette a casa la sua agenda con una tasca cucita all'interno della copertina e notò che da quel momento in poi tutte le agende che vennero prodotte furono provviste di tasche!


..Ma questa non è l'unica cosa che è successa su quel volo.. dopo aver discusso dell'agenda Jane Birkin e Monsieur Dumas avevano ormai rotto il ghiaccio quindi iniziarono a parlare di borse. Jane disse che per lei la borsa perfetta avrebbe dovuto essere di pelle, non troppo grossa e non troppo piccola e soprattutto una borsa che una volta riempita non risultasse troppo pesante, questa borsa - disse Jane - "N'existe pas!". Dopo qualche settimana Jane ricevette un secondo pacco..


Indovinate..


Dumas adattò la borsa Haut à Courroies alla descrizione di borsa che aveva fatto Jane sull'aereo e questa borsa era semplicemente perfetta! Ovviamente questa borsa prese il nome Birkin! Jane Birkin e Grace Kelly al tempo erano le uniche al mondo ad avere una borsa intitolata a loro nome. Una borsa che ha contribuito alla loro immortalità.
